Bird Report 2024

Regular winter visitor and migrant with more or less annual records of breeding. (Amber list).

At Grovebury SP there were two on 1st January, and then two pairs by 5th January. On 4th April, when an additional single was also there, some aggressive interaction was noted between the two pairs. By 28th April one of the pairs was nest excavating, but there was no further breeding activity noted from there. At Priory CP on 27th August, there were three small juveniles, which the observer suggested had probably hatched somewhere locally. There were no other breeding activities reported, although at least two birds were at each of Broom South Quarry, Broom East, Stewartby Lake and Gadsey Brook during the April to June period.

During the year the largest groups were at Grovebury SP, peaking at seven on 14th April, with most of the records through to August also from there. From the end of August to early November, Priory CP then featured regularly, including six there on 8th November. After September there was a big drop in the number of sightings, from just Broom East, Priory CP and Broom South Quarry, with the last of the year at the latter site on 31st December.
