Widespread and fairly common resident. Included in 17.2% of BirdTrack lists. The East of England long-term trend is increasing +22%*. (Green list).

The largest flocks were of 16 moving north-north-west over Myers Farm Potton on 23rd October, 13 over Houghton House at Ampthill on 10th October and 13 at Houghton Brook Pools on 27th August. Other autumnal movements included six over The Pinnacle on 28th September and four over Sandy on 21st September. One in a group of three at Knocking Hoe on 12th October was, according to the observer “an amazing looking melanistic bird with orange wings that flew over a field. Looked just like a Tristram’s Starling Onychognathus tristramii!”.
