Common resident, also occurring as a passage migrant. Included in 12.1% of BirdTrack lists. The East of England long-term trend is increasing +40%*. (Green list).

The only confirmed breeding report was of an adult feeding young in Sandy in August, but clearly this species is under-recorded as a breeding species. In the Summer Garden Bird Survey they were in 30% of gardens, the highest level since 2019.

Peak numbers were in the autumn and winter months, including at least ten at The Lodge in both January and October, and 14 at Wrest Park on 1st September.
