Common resident. Included in 32.3% of BirdTrack lists. The East of England long-term trend is increasing +181%*. (Amber list, referring only to the native population).

The earliest sign of breeding was at Poppy Hill Lakes, with adults incubating on 28th March. Th e fi rst recently fledged goslings, in two broods, were at Broom East on 13th April. Other localities where youngsters were recorded included Blunham Lakes, Coronation ClP, Gadsey Brook, Girtford Lakes, Great Barford Lake, MCP Wetlands NR, Priory CP, Tetworth Hall Estate, The Lodge, Willington GP and Wrest Park. The highest number of goslings counted (52) on any one day was at Priory CP. Brood size across the county ranged from one to ten young.

Counts at the main sites indicated that autumn and wintering flocks had generally decreasedin size compared with the previous two years. On 25th July, at Broom East, there was a total of possibly up to 2,000 (JP).
