Goosander – Steve BlainAccess
Access via Wyboston Lakes Conference Centre, pass the security kiosk (directions), and take the track along the lake. Limited parking near the river – follow route in Site Description. The road continues around to the left (large rookery in poplars on the left and Wyboston Lakes Conference Centre and driving range on the right. The road bends sharply to the left where the good road ends near the main conference centre lake. Take a sharp right onto the unmade track with the water on your left. Follow this track which bends right through bushes and then sharp left for a short distance before another sharp left towards the river. Itโs worth a quick stop here to look at the conference centre lake – usually home to a few Great Crested Grebe but can attract terns – mainly Common but the odd ArcticTern in April/May. The smaller lake on your right sometimes holds a few wildfowl, Goosander in the winter. A Nightingale or two is worth keeping an ear open for in May. Continue towards the river – there is space to park if you veer to the left at the river and scan the river and field opposite. It is a good-looking area, Goosander on the river in winter, feral geese are often over the river with the occasional wild goose among them if you’re lucky (the area is now also home to several Egyptian Geese which have bred regularly around Wyboston since 2014).
Continue south along the river for 100 metres with the small lake on your right and you’ll arrive at Begwary Brook car park on your left.
