Overview

Following our inspiring talk by Charlie Kitchin, RSPB Site Manager, last season we have added a Walk to the wonderful RSPB Nene Washes Reserve. This will be preceded by a visit to Deeping Lakes, run by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. The Walk will be led by Kathy Blackmore and Terry Osborn.

Long-eared Owls have already been reported at their winter roost at Deeping and Short-eared Owls are very regular at Nene Washes as is the resident Tawny Owl with Barn and Little Owls also possible at either site. I am hoping that we may have access to a thermal imager to give a better chance of seeing roosting owls in the daylight hours. Of course there are lots of other birds as well, but this Walk offers the possibility of a wonderful Owl Fest to start our year lists.

We will bring our mobile coffee bar. BUT there are no facilities at either reserve, see below.

This will be a full day to make the best opportunity to see Short-eared and even Barn Owls as dusk falls, so do bring sustenance for the day. It‘s January and it‘s the Fens so we may expect it to be cold and possibly windy, especially standing on the bank at Eldernell – dress accordingly. In all it is quite a long walk and makes a tiring but amazing day. For more information on the individual Reserves see below:
