January 2022 Bird News

White fronted Goose – 25 reported over Willington on 1st, 24 at Cuckoo Bridge Lake on 3rd, presumably the same 20+ at Meadow Lane GP on 4th, one at Priory CP on 1st, six at Blunham Lake on 6th, one at MCP Wetlands NR on 23rd

Pink-footed Goose – one around several locations near Blunham from 5th to 12th, one at Dunstable STW on 19th and 28th, one at Broom GP on 24th

Pintail – two at Meadow Lane GP and one at Blunham Lake on 14th

American Wigeon – the bird from 2021 was last seen at Chimney Corner South ClP on 1st

Scaup – first winter male at Grovebury until 8th at least, female at Henlow from 1st to 20th, and at Brogborough Lake on 3rd to 14th

Goldeneye – again biggest numbers were at Brogborough Lake where there was a peak count of 35

Goosander – birds at Harrold-Odell CP including ten on 4th and 27th, four at Stockgrove also on 4th, three at Rookery North ClP on 23rd,at least four around Eversholt Lake/ and Woburn during the month

Smew – a male at Broom East CWS on 28th

Golden Plover – a flock in fields east of Warden and Galley Hills was counted at 960 on 18th

Cattle Egret – birds continued to be seen south of Clifton including five on 3rd, four on 16th, one still on 23rd. Also one flew over Sandy on 3rd

Mediterranean Gull – an adult in Stewartby Lake roost on 3rd, 6th,, 23rd and 30th

Caspian Gull – a selection of odd birds noted in the roost at Brogborough Lake through the month including first winter  and adult birds. also individual reported from Stewartby Lake on 29th

Marsh Harrier – wintering female again reported occasionally in the brick pits through the month

Merlin – one north of Sheerhatch Wood on 5th

Lesser Spotted Woodpecker – one in Pegnut Wood on 26th and 27th

Blackcaps – lots of reports of birds appearing in gardens from mid-month

Firecrest – one in Leighton Buzzard on 23rd
