September 2020 Bird News

Garganey – one at Priory CP from August remained until 17th, one at Broom East CWS 8th to 16th, one at MCP Wetlands NR on 18th to 22nd at least

Pintail – two at Broom East CWS on 12th, a female at MCP Wetlands NR throughout the month

Ruff – one at Broom East CWS on 2nd,  another on 6th, one at MCP Wetlands NR on 11th, one at Grovebury SP on 26th and 27th

Dunlin – five at Grovebury SP on 27th

Greenshank – one at MCP Wetlands NR on 5th

Caspian Gull – juvenile at Broom South Quarry on 4th, first winter at Grovebury SP on 6th

Great White Egret – one at Brogborough Tip on 7th, possibly the same over Wootton on 10th. One at Broom East CWS on 20th. Regularly sightings through the month at Priory CP, Meadow Lane GP and Willington area

White-tailed Eagle – a satellite-tagged individual from the Isle of Wight reintroduction scheme was seen over Brogborough on the 6th as it made its way from spending much of the summer in the hills south of Edinburgh back to the original release area

Osprey – one over Sandy Heath on 13th

Merlin – one at Blows Down on 24th

Swift – last report noted at Priory CP on 24th September

Whinchat – reports included one at Sandy Heath from 1st to 4th, three at Brogborough Tip on 5th, one at Houghton Brook Pools on 6th, Streatley on 10th, three near Knocking Hoe on 14th, two at Brogborough Tip on 23rd, Blows Down on 24th, Henlow on 27th

Stonechat – one at Brogborough Tip on 8th, another at Sandy Heath on 10th  was the start of a good passage with birds also noted at Sandy Heath, Sharpenhoe, Pegsdon, Streatley. Eight were counted at both Broborough Tip on 26th and at Blows Down on 29th

Redstart – one at Broom East CWS on 5th, birds noted at Streatley with one on 3rd, three on 5th,  one remained 6th, another report from there on 15th

Dartford Warbler – one at The Pinnacle Sandy on 19th, one at Blows Downs from 21st until the end of the month

Yellow-browed Warbler – one in a garden in Putnoe on 29th

Firecrest – two at Ampthill Park on 27th

Spotted Flycatcher – two at Sandy Heath on 4th, two at Streatley on 5th and 6th, four at Brogborough Tip on 7th, a late bird at Palmers Wood on 27th

Siskin – a passage over the county in the first part of September was recorded on a number of days at a variety of sites

Crossbill – regular sightings of up to ten at The Lodge RSPB from 14th
